Street Names for Stateview

On October 18 council agenda there is a report recommending names for the streets and lanes in the Stateview subdivision east of Keele St. I have no doubt as to whether these three individuals merit the honour. All of them have contributed enormously to King City. Having said that I am not satisfied that these specific naming decisions are appropriate given what these individuals stood for.  Jane Underhill passionately defended the King City Community Plan which did not include a development such as this one.

  1. I spoke directly with Jane’s husband Jim and he is truly honoured with this recommendation and believes it is a fitting tribute.

Don’t people (or their estates) who have streets named after them have a say? It is downright disrespectful and disingenuous to misrepresent an endorsement if it is, in fact, the antithesis of what the individual stood for/againt.

As evident from the comment by Mayor Pellegrini the husband has been contacted and he has indcated that he is very pleased that Jane is being honoured in this manner.

    (1) I concur with the previous comments.
    (2) It’s about time that something was named after George Armstrong.
    (3) Fred Beaton did a lot of volunteering and that’s great.

My biggest “beef” is why are we always naming streets and buildings after men!!! I think it’s outrageous. Why is only the man (the ol’ bread-winner) in the family recognized when countless women in our Township sacrificed and worked incredibly hard to make our communities successful. I don’t have names to suggest right now; but the Historical Society and the Museum certainly should have names of important women.

Regarding your comment about lack of females. I believe the Clerks have the list of names already “vetted” for street naming. By vetting I mean that they have been reviewed for merit and with York Region; the latter checks for duplication. I would expect that they could advise whether there are women in the inventory, so to speak. Having said this I think your idea of reaching out to the KTHS for new additional names is a good one.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
I did not know two of the honorees, so cannot comment if these streets are appropriate for their values.
However, I agree completely that this development is neither something that Jane would support, nor with which she would wish to be associated! Are you aware of the Land Trust plans for planting a tree in her memory next weekend (along with Tom Atkins and others)? Does anyone ask the families re naming streets? Thanks,

Precisely my reaction on reading the recommendation.
