King Township secures total of $2.7 million in naming rights for the new, multi-use recreation facility, slated to open in September which will go towards future needs and maintenance of the facility.
The new multi-use recreation facility will now be known as the Zancor Centre for the next 15 years, following a generous $1.5 million contribution from Zancor Homes. Ten-year partnerships have also been secured for the naming rights of the ice pads, aquatic centre and athletic centre:
- JTF Homes Arena: Ice Pad 1 (home rink of the King Rebellion Junior A Team)
- The Country Day School Arena: Ice Pad 2
- Municipal Maintenance Athletic Centre: the artificial turf fieldhouse with running track, and a multi-use community space
- Aqua Tech Solutions Aquatic Centre: the six-lane lap pool and leisure pool
In recognition of its namesake and the organization’s volunteers who have served the King community since 1917, one community room in the Zancor Centre will be named the King City Lions Community Room and another named the Gord Orr Community Room, after a charter member of the club.
With the opening of the new ice rinks, user groups of the King City Lions Arena will relocate to the Zancor Centre. For more information see here.
Glad the Lions and Orr names have been retained.
I too am pleased!
Can’t wait!
Hello Debbie. I don’t see any mention of a gym at this new recreation centre. Is there to be no gym?
Thanks Debbie
Hello Mary, There is no gym. In the artificial turf fieldhouse with running track, and a multi-use community space where many activities can happen(I.e. pickle ball, basketball, volleyball ball etc ) there will be a section where several pieces of gym equipment will be available.
Hello Debbie, I am a long time King City senior who has been attending aquafit classes in Maple. Aquafit is a great way for seniors to stay active and often recommended by health professionals. I have been looking forward to the new King Recreation Centre opening, so I can stay in my own community. Like most seniors I am living on a fixed income. I have discovered that King Recreation Centre aquafit class fees for seniors is ($10.00) they are double the fees charged for seniors at the Maple Community Centre $5.00 per lesson. I understand the new recreation centre needs funding but these fees are unfairly targeting seniors. Can this fee be reviewed and be brought more inline with other York Region recreation fees for seniors?
Hello Catherine, I do appreciate you making your comment. Since reading it I have asked some questions about the issue you have raised: the fee for Seniors to participate in the aquafit classes. That fee of $10 is for a one time session. For example if you were to go 4 times a month it would cost $40.00. Alternatively you could buy a monthly RecPass which gets residents unlimited access to drop-in recreational programming—including swimming, aquafit, and access to fitness equipment and classes. The RecPass is valid at ALL King Township recreation facilities. Fee for Seniors (55+) is $30.25 per month. In the spirit of full disclosure I do confirm that as you report, compared to Maple our fee is twice as great; compared to other Community Centres in YR ours is more but the premium is far less. When one thinks about what can be accessed with a RecPass I think one would evaluate it to be a very good deal. One RecPass fee (i.e. one month) would pay for 6 aquafit sessions at Maple and if you wanted to take more you could or you could take a swim or check out the fitness equipment. See here for more information. https://www.king.ca/recpass
