On Monday April 4 Council agenda there is a report regarding the applications to amend the Official Plan and the zoning bylaw for King City-Schomberg to enable the building of a six story apartment building with 247 units. The site for this building is west side of Keele across from Elizabeth Grove St and going further south; at the north end there is currently the industrial building which was once the potato chip factory. As one would expect, and as is required, in our Official Plan this building needs to incorporate a density higher than what is familiar in King City because of its proximity to the GO station. The April 4th meeting is the statutory public meeting for the application. The recommendation is for Council to receive the report and continue assessment. This is the opportunity for members of the public to ask questions and to make comment. Register to make a deputation by noon April 4 at clerks@king.ca; or send in an email with questions/comments.
As explained in the staff report the transit area of King City is one of the areas for which the new official plan (Our King) is under appeal; therefore the actual official plan amendment is for an amendment against the King City Community Plan. Having said that the application will also be assessed against what we intend for this important area. As noted in the report the northern portion of the site was the site of an application for a stacked townhome development which had actually been approved, including its site plan; unfortunately the property owner did not proceed. The site has been expanded from what it was in the earlier application.
I am very pleased to see that the application is for apartments as this is a housing format which is lacking in King city. If it is built with a very progressive design to meet our highest green building standards this application could be a real win for King City. I am interested to understand better how this fits into the whole transit area.
