Council Working Sessions Of Interest

Oct 2, 2013 | The Issues | 0 comments

There are several “working sessions” for Council this month. At a “working session” Staff presents background information and/or training to Council on an issue. Council asks questions; there may be discussion between Staff and Council. Staff advises next steps which is often a date as to when a specific recommendation will be made to Council. No decisions are made by Council.

Public is welcome to attend these sessions to listen and learn. Public is not allowed to ask questions. Clearly, public can give feedback to their Councillor or the Mayor after the session.

Topic: 2014 Budget Priorites

Background to the topic: Several weeks ago Council members were invited to submit “top 10 priorities” as a 1st step for Staff to build a budget for 2014. In the interim Staff will have looked at the submissions to determine ones that were common and will have started the process to understand cost implications etc. Previous practise was that Staff decided which ones to include in the budget and Council members did not know whether his/her priorities had made it “in” until the 1st draft of the budget was presented. In the spirit of continuous improvement Council requested an interim step; the 10/15 working session is just that.
