Protecting Drinking Water at the Source

To comply with the Clean Water Act (CWA) andLake Simcoe Protection Plan (LSPP)  King Township is preparing its plans for implementation of sewage system maintenance programs to ensure protection of drinking water at the source.  Very specifically, it is necessary for the municipality to ensure integrity of sewage systems in close proximity to municipal drinking water wells, and on properties within 100 meters of Lake Simcoe permanent tributaries.  Staff report at June 23 Council provides details of the plan; you can read it here.

I am very satisfied to read the process Staff has used to develop the plan; namely once again we have collaborated with other municipalaties as opposed to developing it on our own.  I agree with the plan that there should be full cost recovery for the program and that the fees ranging from $99-255 property be added to municipal property tax of each property.  As there is a 5 year cycle for the inspections I think this is manageable and reasonable.

In Ward 5 there will be properties identified for both situations.  There are 7 properties on Manitou which are in close proximity to King City wells;  and some of the 1875 identified properties in the Township close to the tributaries.  Appendix A on the report provides more information.
