Construction on two designated heritage properties located at the King Heritage and Cultural Centre has begun in July. Heating and electrical lighting are being installed at both the church and the train station; also the interior walls and exterior wood panelling is being painted. These enhancements will help make both facilities more conducive spaces to hold recreation and cultural programming and events, as well as attract permit holders. Having accessed the train station several times for different events and exhibitions I am confident that this work will indeed make these two facilities desirable for different occasions. And rather than being simply artefacts they will be assets to our community.
The construction team is also assessing the condition of the King Christian Church (constructed in 1851 and relocated to the site in 1982) to determine whether a basement can be added. The building would need to be relocated on the property for this work to be completed. The King Railway Station (constructed in 1852) last underwent an extensive conservation program when it relocated to the site in 1989.
Updates on the construction progress will be posted online at king.ca/majorprojects
