King currently does not provide a service to residents for dealing with sick or injured wildlife. Recognizing that such a service has been requested by residents Staff did propose to introduce it in 2013 but Council did not agree to fund it (i.e. to include it in the budget.) Staff has now come back with a proposal for a pilot program which can be funded within the established Animal Control Operating Budget.
I am very supportive of the proposal.
- I believe we need the service and I think the idea of a pilot is valuable.
- Given the rural nature of our municipality there is good possibility of a wounded animal arriving in one’s backyard.
- The learnings from it will enable to make a much better decision about this service in future. Specifically, we need to identify the range of service we want to provide (e.g. 24/7 or just Monday to Friday; remove the animal or remove and rehabilitate etc. etc.)
I am also very supportive of the decision to exclude the service of dealing with nuisance animals; as reviewed in the report, there is much a property owner can do to discourage nuisance animals and hence responsibility for managing such needs to remain with the property owner.
Debbie,
Great idea although funding costs will need to be controlled.

Graham
Agree totally that budget will need to be controlled. For me that is one of the benefits of this pilot…to figure out what the demand is etc. Appreciate the feedback. Debbie
