ASK Festival

Arts Society King (ASK) Festival is in full swing.  I participated in the Heritage Bus Tour of Churches on Saturday; and am now looking forward to the Kindred Spirits Orchestra on July 4th.  If you haven’t checked out the tours and events happening in your backyard during the month of July I strongly encourage you to do so; click here.

The tour of the Churches was really interesting.  Yes, I have driven by all the churches included in the tour, including the one on the 10th concession; but, I had not appreciated what I was driving by.   Although I don’t think this influenced the tour composition a clear theme emerged:  with time there is change; and there are many ways to respond to the change.  We saw buildings which were once churches and are now private residences or offices.  We saw churches built by one sect and now used by another.   We saw examples of where congregations have grown which has triggered additions and/or building new larger churches. We also saw churches now deconsecrated and sitting empty.  As I saw the latter I hoped that some good adaptive re-purpose will emerge quickly enough that the buildings are maintained; although I have no personal relationship with those buildings they do give me a sense of place, where I am now and what preceded me and the rest of my generation.

I feel so very fortunate to be living in King where there are people creating such events.   Thanks to the tour guides on the Church tour; and to ASK for organizing the Festival.
