On June 5 council agenda there is a statutory public planning meeting for a development at 12734 and 12750 Keele St. As indicated in the report the area is in our major transit area and intensification and the proposed intensification (144 units in 6 storeys) is appropriate. Given the amount of development in the immediate area (see further below) I think there needs to be serious consideration about some sort of commercial/retail; King Heights does include some but there could be more. The report mentils that there is a small portion on south side as being natural heritage; I want more information about that and I want to see how we can effectively use this to improve the development.
Assuming approval there will be 3 separate apartment or condominium developments on Keele just north of Station Road. I think the number of units residential units across the three will total 507: 234 at Keele West, 129 at King Heights (east side of Keele) and 144 GO King Developments. I know that proximity to GO station is very attractive to a certain demographic but I do wonder if this will prove to be more than the interest. Of course, all of this is not going to happen at same time nor necessarily quickly. The area is going to be in transition for a long time.
No decisions will be made on this report on June 5; this is the statutory public meeting which is the time to hear questions and comments from the public. If you wish to make a deputation and/or provide your comments in an email you need to register (or send that email) by noon June 5 to clerks@king.ca. To clarify, to make a deputation you need to register whether you will do in person at the Municipal Centre or by phone. I am also interested to hear comments directly by making a comment on my blog or contacting me directly.
King City is losing it’s small town feel. It is becoming an extension of Maple or Woodbridge with way too much traffic. I moved here 30 years ago because I liked the town. People were friendly and you knew most of them. I always thought it needed some improvements but the congestion of housing and condos are over the top. I always pictured king to be somewhat like Kleinburg. A small town with coffee shops, small stores, etc. King Road and Keele street needs more of that. All I see is developers realizing their dreams of big money with no regard to how the town is affected.
It’s very sad to see.
Hello John, I cannot disagree. Unfortunately there are some hard cold “facts” which makes it difficult to be like a Kleinburg. There are 2 regional roads going though King City and one of them, King Road, has traffic coming off the 400. The presence of the GO train station also influences what happens in King City. There is the traffic driving through local roads to reach to station and in the vicinity of the station intensification (i.e. condos, apartments) is mandated by Province and Region. Having said all that I think people need to be patient as King City is in transition. And unfortunately the municipality does not control timing of developments; there are developments in process which once implemented will have amenities which will make the streets more attractive to someone walking.
