Internet Voting for 2026 election?

On December 8 Council agenda there is a staff report presenting the option of internet voting in the 2026 municipal election. As reviewed in the report providing this option in addition to the methodology used previously (paper ballots with optical scan tabulators and alternative voting methods for accessibility purposes) can be done for an incremental $30,000. My enthusiasm for doing so is tempered by data which shows a very modest, 3.5%, increase in voter turnout particularly given the 2026 budget exercise just completed. Specifically the Mayor’s Budget did not include programs identified by staff which would improve an improvement in services; for example changing a facilities staff person to full time would cost $25,900 and give improved service delivery with accountability.

I am very appreciative that our Staff has investigated this option because it certainly cannot be ignored. Having said that there is no question that we need to maintain the current methodology. I don’t  understand the comments as to how the $30,000 will be funded and will ask for clarification at council.

I’m certainly interested in hearing from my council colleagues and my blog readers.

As always deputations can be made. To do so please register at clerks@king.ca by noon on December 8 or If you prefer you can e-mail your comments to clerks@king.ca and they will be distributed to Council members and appropriate staff.

We need to keep up with the times. Internet voting makes sense. We bank and pay bills on the internet (including taxes and water bills) for years.

Progress is being made daily and older stats like 3.5% can shift quickly.

Internet voting will catch on fast, and bring a more representative population into the mix. We can’t wait another 4 years for this!!!!
