Motion for new Toronto Carrying Place Trail

May 9, 2026 | Uncategorized | 5 comments

On Council agenda   May 11 there is motion by myself and seconded by Councillor Asselstine including the following:

asking council to endorse in principle a concept to expand and or formalize a recreational multi use trail connection from Toronto through Vaughan, King Township and into Bradford W Guillimbury that generally follows the historic route of the Toronto Carrying Place Trail.

furthermore Council encourages Parks Canada to review the proposal for a new Toronto Carrying Place Trail and to engage with municipalities

And Council further encourages Parks Canada to review the existing designation wording, including consideration of updated, inclusive historical language to support the designation

and finally Council refers this trail proposal to Township staff for review with parks trails and facilities master plan to explore alignment with existing and planned municipal trail infrastructure

I’m very pleased to make this motion.  When I first heard about the concept from Mr. Ian Craig I was very intrigued with the possibilities. Early in my time on Council I was on the Humber Heritage Aliance; one of the activities I was engaged with was a reenactment of the colonizers, specifically Étienne Brûlé using the trail.   The proposed concept  of a new Toronto Carrying Place Trail, would represent a meaningful opportunity to highlight and preserve the shared heritage of the Indigenous communities, early settlers, and generations of people who travelled this historic corridor. To my mind the new Trail is far more meaningful that focusing on one aspect.

As always deputations can be made. To do so please register at clerks@king.ca by noon on May 11 or If you prefer you can e-mail your comments to clerks@king.ca and they will be distributed to Council members and appropriate staff.

Excellent plan. I remember the late Susan Beharriell trying to make this happen years ago. Let’s hope that it really does get created.

Excellent idea to carry forward. I remember Susan Swail, former councillor, mentioning that she was hoping to get this idea moving forward. I hope there is momentum for this initiative now, Debbie.
