I am supportive of the new policy for municipal addresses. As reviewed the policy has traditionally been sensitive to anxiety about use of number thirteen (13) and have not used that number as new addresses are created. With change of demographics, specifically the addition of Cantonese and Mandarin languages, it is now proposed to exclude four (4) and fourteen (14).
Hi Debbie,
I believe that Chinese think that any number with a 4 in it is unlucky, not just 4 and 14, as the report seems to say.
We live at 104 and have realized that unless we get that number changed, we will not be able to sell to a Chinese person.
This can create problems. All 400s then have to be eliminated.
What do you do about existing lots? Will they be renumbered?
I am okay with omitting 4s, but think that all 4s should be omitted, not just 4 and 14.
Hi Nancy, I think the answer is that we can do so much but cannot necessarily do everything someone might want. As for what happens to the neighbouring lots: I believe that is why it is not a foregone conclusion that a number change will be made when someone applies. For example…the property with a “4” might be at the end of street and there is no development beyond it versus a property smack in middle of a street.
To now start to omit 4 will definitely disadvantage those who already have 4 in their address. either change all or change none.
I don’t really understand the “disadvantage.” And what you propose i.e. “change all” is a very significant administrative task.
