Re-purposing Heritage Home on Keele

If you have been on Keele south of King Road you have undoubtedly noticed a couple new businesses, specifically restaurants.  Re-vitalizing this area continues:  at 2/25 Council there was a public meeting for an application to rezone 12974 Keele Street from residential to commercial.  The plan for this property is particularly exciting as the property includes a historically designated property, specifically the Crawford and Maud Wells House.   The application proposes to maintain the existing structure and proposes minimal site alteration.

I suppose there are some who regret that this beautiful Victorian era building will no longer be a private home.  In fact part of me does so also; however, I am not the owner and it is not my call and totally respect the property owner’s decision.  I am thrilled that the proposed plans are ones which will re-purpose the property so that it continues to be a vital positive presence on the street.  On the assumption that the plans are realized as being proposed this will be another good demonstration of how heritage properties, designated or not, can evolve and be relevant.

Here is the Staff report on the project.
