Roundabout Open House

York Region is hosting an open house to provide information on the lead solution for improving the safety of the intersection at Lloydtown Aurora Rd and Keele intersection, namely a roundabout.

Wednesday, Oct. 16
Kettleby Public School
6 PM to 8 PM

I encourage people to attend to learn about the design and to understand why York Region believes this to be the best solution. Here is the formal notice for the meeting.

I have written previously about this plan.  You can find those comments by clicking here or you can go to the “archives” at the bottom right of the home page and type in roundabout.

There is not unanimity in the community as to the lead solution; and I know  there are some property owners who will be directly impacted.   Having said that I do believe that there is no one who thinks status quo is acceptable.

I also agree, status-quo is not an acceptable option. It is important for the Region to have a public meeting, present relevant information and hear from the public on concerns and helpful suggestions to address the problems in a viable, cost-effective way.

Personally I have appreciated several well-placed roundabouts in York Region, as speeds are reduced and traffic flow is maintained.

Having just returned from Italy I experienced a multitude of roundabouts driving there for the first time. An average roundabout had 3 to 5 exits. Gigantic lorries shared the roundabouts with small cars. I observed everyone slowed down, observed the yield protocol and all drivers including myself took the time to observe who was in the roundabout at any given time. Everyone used their turning signals as signage to other drivers if they were getting off at an exit. Destinations were clearly marked. Even the GPS unit vocalized an approaching roundabout and which exit to take. I was very impressed with how traffic flowed and the respect drivers had for each other. Within 20 km, there was an average of one roundabout every 2.5 km. Traffic lights were the exception to the rule.
