Schomberg Agricultural Arena and Community Center

I am disappointed with the reality, so to speak, presented in the Staff report about the proposal to re-purpose lands of Schomberg Agricultural Arena and Community Centre to a transitional care centre; as reviewed the negotiations between King and Caregiver Omnimedia have not been successful.  I am disappointed as the proposal was a bold, innovative one offering many benefits.  But, as a winning solution for both parties did not emerge it is time to move on.  The recommended re-purposing, specifically to house the Parks Division and equipment, is very practical.  I know enough to accept that the need is truly there; but I have do have questions for Staff before I will be able to approve it.

I need to understand how this proposal meets the expectations of the community as identified in the extensive community consultation 2-3 years ago;  I do know that the intent to refurbish the tennis courts will be welcomed but other than that I am not sure. I also want to have more understanding about the recommended transfer of $1.078 million dollars from the Parkland Reserve Account to complete the  funding of the Trisan Centre.  (Recall that when Trisan Centre funding formula was determined back in 2007 or thereabouts, it included ~$1million dollars to be secured via selling the Schomberg Agricultural and Community Centre back; the Council elected in 2010 decided to not sell it and instead have sought to find a use of value to the Community and to achieve better value for the lands.) I believe the continued assurance of access to the grounds for the annual Schomberg Agricultural Fair will be welcomed.

This is a complicated project.  When you want to accomplish something innovative, the route is often not straightforward.

I would resent the parkland reserve fund going to Trisan. A centre that serves a small population of our township.
Wouldn’t it be better to go towards starting a fund for a community centre close to where the majority of our population is. Somewhere between King and Nobleton

Hello Joanne, Council wants very much to build a recreational facility in the King City area. We are are investigating partnerships with other municipalities and institutions like Seneca.

At first blush, this seems to be a reasonable use of the lands. I’m excited about the opportunity to keep the tennis courts as long as the safety aspects of accessing the courts is properly addressed. Would be really nice to have lighting added to the courts for night time use!

Hello Tom, I will pass on your comments to Staff; and I suggest you do same with your Councillor. Last evening at Council there was confirmation that most of the Parks Division’s equipment will be stored indoors; the exception will be pick up trucks. Also, piles of aggregate, sand will not be stored there.
