Shuttle Buses To/From King City GO

We need more parking for the King City GO Train station.   One quick fix would be a shuttle service between remote parking locations and the station.   To that end at the 08/29 Council meeting I gave notice of a motion to “request the York Region Transportation Services Committee to investigate and report upon options of parking/shuttle services within King Twp. to help alleviate and remedy the existing as well as future increase of parking demands at the King City GO Station.”  The notice was seconded by Councillor Mortelliti; it will be debated at the September 12th Council meeting.

The severity of the problem increased last week with the addition of a 5th train.  And in the near future it will increase further when trains are increased from 10 to 12 cars.  The ideal solution may be a multi level parking garage but that is clearly a long term one; also, I consider it to be a real long shot given the capital cost.  Hence, it is critical to be pursuing shuttles.  Plus, it is entirely consistent with the YR Transportation Plan to provide transit services amongst our villages. You can read my motion here in its entirety.

Fixing the problem is critical as it encourages one of two bad alternates. I) It discourages commuters to use public transit.  The gridlock on our roads is costing us productivity and it is very bad for our health.  2) It encourages people to park on the residential streets around the station which is entirely inappropriate.

There are still many old properties on Station Rd. Are any of these available for purchase and expansions of current parking lots?

Hi Tony, I can’t answer your question directly; but, I can say that we are pursuing many ideas including looking for new parking lots.

It seems a shame that the land across the road from the King City GO station was sold entirely for estate homes. There is so much development going on in King City, that I think the only realistic solution is to build a parking garage (asap). It seems that we build the homes and worry about the infrastructure to support the additional people later.

I really hope the province, the region and the town does the right thing, by supporting public transportation and those
    who use it.

Hi Pam, You are so right—the historical practise has been to build the houses, bring in the new population and THEN start planning for how to provide the necessary services. We are definitely in catch up mode. I am going to keep this on my radar screen until we get a solution. Debbie

I would propose having a yearly or bi-yearly survey and pass on to King City or King Township residents and get their views on these issues as well as about future proposals.

Hello Amir, I agree….there is significant opportunity for improving our communication processes to get feedback on how people assess options etc. For sure, before doing so, we need to get clear on what we are going to do with the feedback. Thanks for contributing. Debbie

Hi new Nobleton resident, Oh how I wish that I could review with you the various plans in process to provide relief…but I cannot. All I can say is that there is work in process. If you are up to a brisk walk there is the option of parking at Wellesley Park which is on north west corner of King Rd and Keele; from there it would be a 20 min. walk (based on one occasion when I have done so.)

That’s too bad that they haven’t come up with anything yet! Not sure what I’ll end up doing parking wise yet…Is the lot usually full by the time people get there for the 7:21 train? Maybe I will be taking the earlier train
