Street and Corner Makeovers in King City

We are one step closer to 2 important intersections in King City getting a makeover in 2013!  As I indicated earlier the urbanization of King Road and Dufferin is schedule to be implemented this summer.  And at May 6th Council there was unanimous approval of an application for funding support for remaking Keele/King Road intersection.  King Rd./Dufferin makeover

When I wrote about the urbanization of King Road and Dufferin earlier I was only able describe it.  I can now provide you with a visual. As I said this is being funded solely from the development in the area; and it is to be completed by this fall.

King Road/Keele

As I explained earlier the funding is not as simple as above as there is not a development which has generated DC’s for this intersection.   Happily there is a partnership funding opportunity with York Region as both roads are regional ones.  Furthermore there is regional maintenance work scheduled for this intersection which we can leverage.   And finally we do have funds which can be appropriately drawn from.

Timing:  pending our application for Municipal Streetscape Partnership Program (MSPP) being approved the 1st phase will be done this year.  (1st phase is the west corners.)

For the past many years those who have been at the intersection have been able to enjoy immensely the oasis of flowers and plantings on the NW corner thanks to the Nobleton and King City Horticultural Society.  Since writing about this “streetscaping” opportunity  I and other members of Council have been reminded of this very generous volunteer work; specifically the efforts of Sheila Jarvis and Maria Pedersen has been hi-lighted.   There is a commitment to ensure that plant materials are salvaged and appropriately repositioned in some other public space; and the rocks from township farms will be repositioned also.

To see what is proposed go this report and see pages 8, 9, 10 for drawings.

Our Staff is to be commended for uncovering this opportunity to realize signficant funding support AND for pulling together an application very quickly for 2013 work.  As reviewed in the report applications will be made for Nobleton for 2014.
