On Monday June 13 council agenda there is a very interesting staff report presenting the draft Municipal Tree Management plan. Even though it is the first one, many of the activities are happening to some degree already; but, this is the first time a plan with goals and objectives have been presented for Council review and endorsement. And, very importantly its the first time for the public to learn how our public trees, which are an increasingly valuable asset, are maintained, protected and enhanced. I strongly encourage that you read the report; it is easy reading. As always, you can make a deputation and/or email your comments to clerks@king.ca by noon June 13. I will be asking for clarification on several points but overall this is a very worthwhile report.
I am impressed with several aspects of the report.
- the tree inventory and data management; this sets stage for increasing our canopy, If we really are committed to doing so, as we can track progress and Identify need for additional resources.
- recognition that increasing the canopy is not just about planting more trees; rather it’s about protecting what’s in the ground already and maintaining them with timely pruning.
- the lists of approved species, and where each is best located (i.e. park or street) and the list of undesirable trees
- the indication that the Parks & Forestry Division is planning to influence more development applications
The report identifies very clearly why our public trees need to be managed: source of oxygen, sequesters green house gases, water retention and they are simply beautiful. If you believe this you have to wonder why we are reluctant to protect trees on private property.
