York Region Open House on Provincial Review of Conservation Plans

Jun 8, 2014 | Debbie in the Community | 2 comments

Two conservation plans of great importance to King are up for provincial review in 2015, the Greenbelt Plan and the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan.  Both King Township and York Region have already been soliciting information from residents & businesses in different forums.  And in case of York Region, preliminary feedback/input has already been given.  York Region is now hosting a series of open houses;  on Tuesday June 10 from 5:30-8pm at King City Arena and Community Centre.  This is an excellent opportunity to provide input and learn more.

King Township should be hosting info sessions to know what its residents think about these plans. Except for the one meeting where the Planning Department put forward a controversial paper and the Township Council decided to allow it to go forward to York region without its express endorsement, there has not been another meeting, even though the CAO has held some private meetings to appease some of us …nothing has been developed. CCKT held a great meeting which was well advertised. Now York region is hosting a meeting and it is well advertised. But King Township has not held a meeting specifically on this topic. It should be doing so and not trying to include this topic in the official plan review process.

Hi Nancy, 1st..I apologize for being so slow in posting your comment and replying to it; it got buried in other things. The reviews of the conservation plans and official plan are lengthy; I do wish there was a way to complete the total cycle more quickly. In the case of the conservation plans we are clearly not in the driver’s sea; the Province hasn’t even identified how they will do the review or whether all or only portions will be reviewed. I believe there will be good opportunity for public engagement but indeed the plan/schedule for such is not defined. I agree that CCKT’s Kingbridge event was very good; it was a good way to provide education on many of the issues. Its my understanding that the couple meetings of the CAO with some residents was to consider different ways to engage public; as you have said, there has been no execution yet but I know it has not been forgotten.
