Intersection Makeovers in King City

2 important intersections in King City could get a makeover in 2013!  Council has been shown the plans for the urbanization of King Road and Dufferin.  And at Council on 5/6 there is a proposal for a streetscape initiative at King Road and Keele.   Both of these initiatives are very much welcomed!

King Rd./Dufferin makeover

  • Funding is solely from the development in the area; specifically, development charges (DC’s) to both York Region and King Township and developer contribution.
  • Components of the makeover include landscaping with 235 trees, connections to trail systems, street lighting, 1.65 km. of sidewalk.  Council asked Staff to avoid large areas of grass which ultimately will be covered with dandelions and require frequent mowing by looking at ground covers, slow growing grasses.  For all the planted products we stressed need to consider drought resistant.
  •  Timing:  start in May; completion in fall.

King Road/Keele

  • Funding is not as simple and easy as above as there is not a development which has generated DC’s for this intersection.   Happily there is a partnership funding opportunity with York Region as both roads are regional ones.  Furthermore there is regional maintenance work scheduled for this intersection which we can leverage.   And finally we do have funds which can be appropriately drawn from.
  •  Timing:  this summer pending approval by Council and our application for Municipal Streetscape Partnership Program (MSPP) being approved.

Since a great deal of sweat has gone into the Northwest corner of Keele and King by members of the Nobleton and King City Horticultural Society, especially Maria Pedersen and Sheila Jarvis, please ensure that opportunities are given to the Society to salvage as much as possible of the plant material that has gone into that corner. The rocks were donated from neighbourhood farms, for example. It would be good if they could be moved to Wellesley Park rather than dumped. Thanks.

Absolutely Ros. Over the past many years The Nobleton and King City Horticultural Society have given the community a small oasis of beauty at a very brutal intersection. Debbie
