Re-naming and Re-positioning the Museum

Feb 9, 2015 | Debbie in the Community, The Issues | 4 comments

As summarized in a report at February 9 Council  a new chapter is beginning at the Museum.  With approval of the recommendations the museum and its entire site will now be called the King Heritage and Cultural Centre where King’s unique and vibrant heritage and culture will be celebrated.  This new positioning is very much in line with the Museum’s strategic plan; and it has the support of the major stakeholders, namely Community Museum Board, Arts Society King (ASK) and King Township Historical Society (KTHS).

In addition, the report reviews physical improvements to the Museum being initiated as a result of the partnership with Genview.  The initial benefit for  permitting Genview to have their Sales Office at the Museum for 2+ years was  critical maintenance items such as a new roof and an expansion for floor space by building a new room.  Now, a number of significant improvements will be realized over the next couple months including new signage, lighting in parking lot & facility, window upgrades, installation of a kitchen, upgrades to washrooms to meet accessibility requirements, installation of storage in the new exhibition space.

Given that we have just completed our 2015 Budget, the reality of our limited financial resources  is very fresh in my mind.  This reinforces for me the validity of the previous Council’s decision to have entered into the partnership with Genview as we could not have achieved the magnitude of  change that we are making now.

    Hi Debbie,
Thanks for letting us know about the plans for the King Museum and its new impressive name. With the name change, I am sure that you are hoping that more people will be inspired to visit the King Heritage and Cultural Centre.
The parking lot is too small. The thought of trying to park in such a limited parking lot makes me think that what I see inside will be Mickey Mouse too. I hope that an adequate parking lot becomes higher on the agenda than it is right now.

Hello Nancy, Yes indeed I hope there will be more visitors to the museum but clearly that is not going to happen with a name change; rather it will be the new programming which will (Hopefully) draw them there. And yes,the parking lot is inadequate…and on the assumption that we do get more traffic the problem will not go away. 1st phase does not include more parking area; there is a hope to expand. I keep saying that any additional space must be done with some sort of permeable surface as more asphalt is not desirable.

    Hi Debbie,
Thanks for your response. I totally agree that some sort of semi permeable surface would be good when the Township gets around to expanding the parking lot.

I wish my neighbour in Nobleton had been made to take out the asphalt that he installed over his entire backyard and wish that he was instructed to use a semi-permeable pavement if he did not want any grass. Perhaps that should be the new Township standard. No more asphalt on people’s lots.

      Hi Nancy,
I believe the comprehensive zoning bylaw review is an opportunity: we need to have %lot coverage limits in the older subdivisions. Currently the latter only has restrictions on size of house & garage by referring to lot coverage but there are no limits to terraces, pools etc.
