Serra’s “SHIFT” is designated

King Township Council voted to designate “SHIFT” as being of cultural heritage value or interest on 2/25/13. Designating the sculpture is long overdue and I am proud to be on the Council which made the decision.  And I am thrilled to be living in a community where there are individuals who have cared so much about “SHIFT” that they have been tenacious in pursuing its designation.

SHIFTWithout  question it is an unusual  innovative sculpture in itself; and its placement in a field such that it is not readily visible is unusual.  I suspect it is this very uniqueness which initially captured the imagination and minds of people originally.  With research and study the importance of this sculpture by the internationally acclaimed artist Richard Serra became recognized and the importance of designating it became clear.  It is a unique cultural landmark.  Its position in the evolution of 20th century art is important.  Designation under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act is appropriate.

Here is the Committee of the Whole agenda including links to the staff report recommending its designation and numerous related reports. (Note:  you will need to scroll down on the 1st page to reach the links.)

If you aren’t familiar with “SHIFT” I recommend that you look at this video on youtube.

Thanks for your support of the Cultural Heritage designation of Shift, Debbie. After 9 years’ slog to try and achieve this, the many supporters of this remarkable monumental sculpture in King City can finally feel that the preservation of the piece is progressing. But there still remain obstacles and the work of ‘Friends of Shift’ will continue. For further information, please contact me, Fiona.
