King City Community Plan:  strengthening it to protect character

Councillor Mortelliti’s motion to investigate the opportunity to strengthen the severance policies within the  King City’s Community Plan to protect the integrity and character of the established communities was passed unanimously in at Council 11/14.   I have been told that our policies are pretty strong  already; but given the clear indication of the current residents that severances are not desirable because of how it jeopardizes the impression (and reality) of spaciousness and bountiful vegetation it is appropriate that we do this check including benchmarking of policies in other municipalities.

You can read the motion here.  I will keep you posted as to when the report is tabled.

I am thrilled that council has made this decision. One issue residents are concerned about has been addressed. Unfortunately, the contractors building new homes on my street chop down large, beautiful, old trees to build their “mansions”.
Take a drive in the sub-divisions where new homes are being built and it becomes very evident that the “integrity and character of the established communities” has not been respected. Consequently the modest bungalows beside these new homes have lost their privacy and sunlight. In addition, the market value for these bungalows has been reduced as builders are only interested in the property.

You are right to point out that “integrity and character” can be ruined/harmed by cutting down trees. I see no reason that our investigation of ways to strengthen the policies should not include consideration of the trees too. Thanks for the idea.
