Sustainability–Foodstock!

Our public forum on  sustainability is Thursday, October 20.  For reminder of details see my home page.  I hope you are able to join us as we continue to develop a plan for King’s future.

Sunday I participated in a very creative  and very “tasty” fund raising to support opposition to an outrageous assault on sustainability, namely the mega quarry in Melancthon Township just north of Shelburne. “Tasty” because it featured many of the great chefs of Ontario offering freshly prepared treats showcasing local fresh food and their culinary craft.  “Creative” because the chefs produced their wonders at cooking stations positioned throughout a hard wood bush beside the proposed future quarry.

The huge turnout (>20,000 people) surely demonstrates that people are rejecting the full implications and consequences of development (a quarry in this case) which includes removing 2,200 acres class 1 agricultural lands from production, putting 300 trucks/hour on 2 lane roads.  Click here to learn more.

Good news is that Premier McGuinty responded to public pressure prior to the election and is now requiring an environmental assessment of the project.

Let’s not wait until we have a crisis like Melancthon Township.  Let us plan now the future we want in King. I do hope that you will be at the Forum on Thursday.
