Traffic Calming in King City

Oct 11, 2023 | Budget, The Issues | 0 comments

Throughout the 2022 municipal election campaign every candidate heard that there was a need for traffic calming.  In 2023 in Ward 5 work has been done to address the issue in 2 areas:  the network of streets leading to the GO train station  and the neighbourhood west of Keele/north of King Road (which includes Martin, Norman, Melrose, Hambly, Charles). As summarized below traffic calming has been implemented or is in process of being installed in both areas identified.  Although  no one doubts the need I have heard some disappointment about the need for some of the measures but the benefit for all is fully acknowledged.   The development of the plan and the execution occurred after petitions showed community interest (i.e >20% households on the street agree that there is a concern).  If you are concerned about traffic on your street and think that traffic calming would be beneficial see here on how to get a traffic calming assessment conducted and/or contact me.

To develop the plan appropriate for the specific area  data on traffic speeds and volume was collected and analysed.  Public Works then designed a plan including various traffic calming measures such as speed humps, installation of a variety of signs including stop signs, speed feedback signs and speed limit signs.  The traffic calming plan for the GO station area has been implemented.  The plan for the other area  (west of Keele/north of King Rd) will be fully completed in 2024 but some of it has already been done;  completion in 2023 is not feasible given budget constraint.
