On Council Oct. 15 agenda there is a staff report recommending the solution for implementing the previously approved plan to modify the winter maintenance strategy for our roads. The latter will eliminate use of rock salt on our roads and the use of Thawrox treated salt and sand in various proportions depending on the kind of road. To implement this strategy there is need to store materials a new site which will cost incremental $18,000. I am supportive of the recommendation as it is evident that very thorough analysis of options have been made.
Previously (May 2024) staff presented a thorough report as to how we could modernize the Township’s Winter Maintenance level
of service to a more efficient and environmentally-friendly use of winter materials.
Proposed strategy
100% Thawrox treated salt on the urban roads (current is 50/50 rock salt/rock salt)
60/40 thawrox treated salt/sand on paved rural roads (current is 50/50 sad/rock salt)
97/3 (sand/thawrox treated salt) on gravel rural roads (current is 90/10 sand/rock salt)
As always, if you want to make a deputation please register with clerks@king.ca by noon October 15.. If you want to send an email to Council please send to clerks@king.ca an email by noon Oct. 15.
I was previously pleased that we no longer used salt on the urban road by our Nobleton home. I figured that there was no need to have a pristine road on a non arterial road. Salt corrodes and I do not approve of having my cars degraded unnecessarily.
For clarification, Thawrox is chemically treated rock salt. So using Thawrox may lessen but does not eliminate the use of rock salt.
